Building a Complete Home Security Package: Where to Start

2026-07-105 min readBy Oz Installers Team

CCTV, alarms, intercom, smart locks and smoke alarms all cover different gaps — here's how to prioritise if you're starting from scratch.

Building a Complete Home Security Package: Where to Start

Most homes end up adding security piece by piece rather than all at once — which is fine, but it helps to know how the pieces actually fit together before you start.

Start With What You're Actually Protecting Against

  • **Break-ins while you're away** — alarms and monitored sensors are the core answer here; cameras help identify and record, but an alarm is what actually alerts someone.
  • **Deliveries and visitors** — a video doorbell or intercom covers this without needing a full camera system.
  • **General visibility and evidence** — CCTV covers entry points and the property generally, day or night.
  • **Access control** — smart locks remove the "who has a spare key" problem and log entries.
  • **Life safety** — smoke alarms are the one category that isn't optional, and they solve a completely different problem to the rest.

A Sensible Build Order

1. **Smoke alarms first** — non-negotiable, and often overdue for replacement in older homes. 2. **Alarm system** — the core deterrent and detection layer for the whole property. 3. **CCTV at entry points** — front door, back door, driveway; expand from there if needed. 4. **Video doorbell or intercom**, depending on whether you have a single front door or a gated/multi-entry property. 5. **Smart locks** last, once you know which doors actually need one (not every property needs all entries converted).

Bundling Saves More Than Buying One at a Time

Cabling, site assessment and a technician's time on-site are shared costs across a job — booking CCTV and an alarm system together, for example, is genuinely cheaper than booking them as two separate visits weeks apart.

Our Recommendation

If you're starting from nothing, get smoke alarms sorted first, then build outward based on which of the scenarios above actually worries you most — there's no single "correct" full system, just the right priority order for your property.
